Gary Chomiski
About
Gary Chomiski's drag racing legacy began in 1971 at Keystone Dragways near his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Competing across NHRA's Division 5, he established himself as a force in modified and competition eliminator categories.
winning at various points meets in Douglas, Wyoming, Pueblo, Colorado, Orlando, Florida, and Brainerd, Minnesota, among others. He was also a crew chief in Charlotte, North Carolina, further honing his expertise. His accomplishments include becoming the final Division V modified champion before the class was dissolved and setting an impressive 20 NHRA records throughout his career.
In 1975, Gary co-founded Drag City Performance with Lawrence Juscu, selling performance parts and engines. When Bison Dragway closed in 1976, the two purchased its assets, relocating them to Gimli, Manitoba, where they established a new drag strip.
This move not only supported their speed shop, but also sustained the drag racing community in Manitoba. Today, under new ownership, this track continues to operate as Interlake Dragway, a testament to Gary's early vision and dedication to the sport.
In 1998, Gary moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he expanded his engine-building business, providing power for both Canadian and U.S. racers. He worked with top pro-stock teams like Elite Motorsports and contributed to the success of drivers like Steve Schmidt, Brad Kline, and Matt Hartford.
Today, Gary manages a competition eliminator team with a pro-stock truck driven by his son, Taylor, who races under Gary's iconic 5233, a number that has represented the Chomiski name for over 50 years. With a career as a racer, speed shop owner, engine builder, crew chief, and track owner, Gary's contributions to drag racing make him a candidate for the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
